Making Sense, by Michael Reagan

Plans to build a mosque and Islamic center just 200 meters from the former site of the World Trade Center where 3,000 people died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks are not merely inappropriate, they are an outrage.

This isn’t about some sort of reconciliation between Muslims and their New York neighbors, it’s the equivalent of plunging a dagger into the very heart of America. If the Muslim community had any sense of compassion for the feelings of their fellow Americans, they’d find someplace else to build their mosque. Instead, they choose a site that forever serves as a reminder of that fatal blow against the American people.

Incredibly, the proposed $100 million development is located at the site of the former Burlington Coat Factory in Lower Manhattan, which closed after the landing gear from one of the 9/11 planes hit the building. It is about 200 meters from World Trade Center, where 3,000 people died in the terrorist attack.

Do the members of the Muslim community have any idea of how the American people feel about the site of that cowardly attack on the World Trade Center buildings? Do they not understand that the site itself stands as an indictment of the perfidy of the 9/11 sneak attack and is the least appropriate site for a Muslim religious complex that will stand as a stark reminder of that attack and the people behind it?

The proposed mosque will be part of what is known as the Cordoba House project, a 13-story Muslim community center planned to include a theater and sports facilities, including a swimming pool.

I agree with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin who asked “peace-seeking Muslims, to try to understand that a Ground Zero mosque is unnecessary provocation; it stabs hearts.”

That fact failed to impress Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), who is reported to have said “there is controversy and there are parties that have a political agenda and want to intimidate the American people against the mosque project which has not yet begun.” He singled out Republican Congressman Peter King, whose opinion, he said, “should not be considered because his ideas are extreme.

Rep. King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said he favors an investigation into the funding of a proposed mosque near ground zero and has demanded an investigation into the financing of the center. He wants to know who is really footing the bill for the 100 million dollar project.

“It’s a house of worship, but we are at war with al-Qaida,” King told the AP. “I think the 9/11 families have a right to know where the funding comes from; I think there are significant questions.

“Right at this moment in history, it’s bad form to put it there,” he said. “There are things you are allowed to do, but that aren’t appropriate to do.”

According to Imam Abdul Rauf, the Islamic center would be financed through contributions from Muslims here in the United States, and by donations from various Arab and Islamic countries. He admits that building a Mosque, due to accommodate some 2,000 worshippers, has stirred heated controversy and criticism from families of 9/11 victims.

That’s putting it mildly. Many of the 9/11 victims’ families have voiced strong objections to the proposed mosque. Evelyn Pettigano, whose sister died on 9/11, told the Associated Press: “I’m not prejudiced.it‘s too close to the area where our family members were murdered.”

And said the mother of a New York City firefighter who died as well: “I think it’s despicable, and I think it’s atrocious that anyone would even consider allowing them to build a mosque near the World Trade Center.”

If this project is allowed to continue, Mohamed Atta WINS!!!

That pretty much says it all.

    I understand the feelings behind your commentary regarding the building of a mosque near ground zero. I see it differently, however. The fact that America's model is based on a pluralistic society contrary to modern theocratic states the extremists wish to set up. I see it as a loss to Mohammed Attma and his ilk. The very fact that even the outright attack of The US by the extremist criminals didn't deter America from its course of freedom, freedom of religion, and freedom from tyranny. Many other countries might have succumbed to the mistaken belief that a rigid autocratic authority would be the best way to deal with these fanatics. Nothing is further from the truth. I would welcome the mosque as a gesture to many of islamic belief that they are not held responsible for the action of a few. Are all Christians the same? I think not. Just as all Japanese Americans were not loyal to Japan at the start of the Second World War.. Just as all Muslims are not of the same rigid and bizarre interpretation of the Koran. The fanatics lose again.

    I don't think seperation of Muslim community from American people is appropriate. There are Muslim community people who are American people and there are American people who are Muslim community people. Rather there are American people who practice the Muslim religion.

    You can argue that that the Muslim religion is contradictory to American ideas. But I agree with greg in that the American idea of freedom and justice supersedes. Any bad feelings should be directed towards the idea which caused 9-11, the idea is hate

    Good Life: "Succumbing to emotion rather than honoring the US."

    I've succumbed to emotion as well. Maybe it is because I knew people that died on 9/11 . . . and also more than a few that died in Iraq.

    But I am not upset about the mosque itself . . . or even the location.

    What frosts my balls are these two things:

    1) The planned opening dedication is scheduled for 9/11/11.

    2) Calling it the "Cordoba House Project".

    The first is obvious. The second is just another "up yours" pointed in our direction and essential says "we have conquered you – what was once yours is now ours". The meaning comes from the Great Mosque of Cordoba . . . which was originally being built as the Christian church St Vincent. During construction, it was taken over during an Islamic conquest and converted into a mosque.

    Six Flags having Muslim family Day on the 9/11 weekend this year. Seriously? Whay THAT weekend? There is a Christian family day a month or so earlier . . . they couldn't swap them? You can just picture the morons in the marketing department, sitting around the table discussing the year's upcoming schedule: "So, Ahhhhkmed, what day should we have Muslim Day this year?" "Well, Bob, I think we should have it on the 9/11 weekend – that makes the most sense as many non-muslims will be away from the park mourning what took place on 9/11/01 – you know, the day a bunch of radical muslims murdered 3000 Americans".

    Whoever is responsible should be fired and hung out to dry.

    As for Mr. Reagan's piece — Timothy McVeigh was a Christian. This means we shouldn't allow any Christian churches to be built in downtown Oklahoma City, right?*

    Since the victims of this Christian terrorist attack will have to walk past those Christian churches and be forcibly reminded of the cowardly assault on innocent Americans perpetrated by a Christian extremist … well, obviously we can't offend their sensibilities.

    Maybe we should even consider banning all Christian activity in the US, just to make sure that there's never another act of Christian terrorism. That'll surely make us much more secure, won't it?

    And not even remotely bigoted.

    Respect the Office? Yes.

    Respect the Man in the Office? No, I am sorry to say.

    I have noted that many elected officials, both Democrats and Republicans, called upon America to unite behind Obama.

    Well, I want to make it clear to all who will listen that I AM NOT uniting behind Obama !

    I will respect the Office which he holds, and I will acknowledge his abilities as an orator and wordsmith and pray for him, BUT that is it.

    I have begun today to see what I can do to make sure that he is a one-term President !

    Why am I doing this ?

    It is because:

    – I do not share Obama's vision or value system for America ;

    – I do not share his Abortion beliefs;

    – I do not share his radical Marxist's concept of re-distributing wealth;

    – I do not share his stated views on raising taxes on those who make $150,000+ (the ceiling has been changed three times since August);

    – I do not share his view that America is Arrogant;

    – I do not share his view that America is not a Christian Nation;

    – I do not share his view that the military should be reduced by 25%;

    – I do not share his view of amnesty and giving more to illegals than our American Citizens who need help;

    – I do not share his views on homosexuality and his definition of marriage;

    – I do not share his views that Radical Islam is our friend and Israel is our enemy who should give up any land;

    – I do not share his spiritual beliefs (at least the ones he has made public);

    – I do not share his beliefs on how to re-work the healthcare system in America ;

    – I do not share his Strategic views of the Middle East ; and

    – I certainly do not share his plan to sit down with terrorist regimes such as Iran .

    Bottom line: my America is vastly different from Obama's, and I have a higher obligation to my Country and my GOD to do what is Right !

    For eight (8) years, the Liberals in our Society, led by numerous entertainers who would have no platform and no real credibility but for their celebrity status, have attacked President Bush, his family, and his spiritual beliefs !

    They have not moved toward the center in their beliefs and their philosophies, and they never came together nor compromised their personal beliefs for the betterment of our Country !

    They have portrayed my America as a land where everything is tolerated except being intolerant !

    They have been a vocal and irreverent minority for years !

    They have mocked and attacked the very core values so important to the founding and growth of our Country !

    They have made every effort to remove the name of GOD or Jesus Chris t from our Society !

    They have challenged capital punishment, the right to bear firearms, and the most basic principles of our criminal code !

    They have attacked one of the most fundamental of all Freedoms, the right of free speech !

    Unite behind Obama? Never ! ! !

    I am sure many of you who read this think that I am going overboard, but I refuse to retreat one more inch in favor of those whom I believe are the embodiment of Evil!

    PRESIDENT BUSH made many mistakes during his Presidency, and I am not sure how history will judge him. However, I believe that he weighed his decisions in light of the long established Judeo- Christian principles of our Founding Fathers!!!

    Majority rules in America , and I will honor the concept; however, I will fight with all of my power to be a voice in opposition to Obama and his "goals for America ."

    I am going to be a thorn in the side of those who, if left unchecked, will destroy our Country ! ! Any more compromise is more defeat !

    I pray that the results of this election will wake up many who have sat on the sidelines and allowed the Socialist-Marxist anti-GOD crowd to slowly change so much of what has been good in America !

    "As for Mr. Reagan’s piece — Timothy McVeigh was a Christian. This means we shouldn’t allow any Christian churches to be built in downtown Oklahoma City, right?*"

    I can only speak for myself . . . and as I have said, I've no problem with there being a mosque built there. My issue is with the insensitivity of the date of the opening ceremony. You can not tell me it is not being done on purpose.

    "Maybe we should even consider banning all Christian activity in the US, just to make sure that there’s never another act of Christian terrorism."

    Just wondering . . . was the McVeigh attack done in the name of Christ? You really don't see the difference do you?

  16. Warren Avatar

    ArtW: Of course it's happening on that weekend — but your choice of phraseology ("9/11 weekend") is considerably and deliberately more inflammatory than simply saying it's happening on 9/12.

    You might not like this, but the day itself, 9/11, is not holy, and it is not sacrosanct, and it is not owned by Americans to the exclusion of Muslims or anyone else.

    "My issue is with the insensitivity of the date of the opening ceremony. You can not tell me it is not being done on purpose."

    Fair enough — it very probably is deliberate, but I'm not sure it's intended to be a slap in anyone's face. It would probably surprise at least some Muslims to realize that dedicating a mosque near GZ on the anniversary of the attacks is insensitive, but then again, it's probably shocking to Mr. Reagan to know that many people find him insensitive. We all have our blind spots.

    There were a few dozen Muslims killed in the WTC on that day, so the Muslim community feels — at least to some extent — that they have the same kind of ownership of that day as most other American citizens do, even those of us who didn't know anyone who was killed.

    The question is this. In terms of their rights to feel that ownership, are they Muslims, or are they Americans? We know how Mr. Reagan feels. What about you?

    On my bad days, I tend to put a lot of blame on the Muslim community at large for what I see as their tolerance of religious — murderous — extremism. On my better days, I realize it's not really up to them to take responsibility for the actions of random psychopaths. The middle road, I suppose, is for them to schism from the extremist subgroups entirely, but that doesn't seem to have visibly happened yet.

    "Just wondering . . . was the McVeigh attack done in the name of Christ?"

    He seemed to believe it was in retaliation for Waco and Ruby Ridge, and his politics were hopelessly muddled, so I'd say probably not. He wasn't blowing up an abortion clinic, after all.

    Art—-The problem is you are not dealing with your "enemies". You are dealing with some who belong to a group associated with your "enemies". And your "enemies" are a small micro part of that group, yet you prejudicial condemn the entire group for the sins of the tiny minority of the group.

    Pick out any group you happen to belong to. Should others condemn you for the sins of a few that belong to that group? The US was attacked under that premise. A tiny minority of Americans go to the Mid-East and attack the beliefs of conservative Muslims and they expand that to all Americans and attack the symbols of American finance and military (and maybe government). It is interesting that they picked these targets and not a random group of Americans. If you would be as selective in your emotions it would be more understandable.

    The first words from my mouth upon seeing the tower was, "This is war". I fully expected a more powerful response to those that attacked the US than we had. I expected every soldier, every marine, every pilot to drop anything and everything that would explode on those that committed the action. The feeble action was disappointing. Yet, I had no desire to attack anyone not associated with the action.

    We need to stop being to frikkin PC.

    Islamic jihad is out to conquer the world and unite it under sharia law, and Islam supports this. Until Muslims as a whole reject and banish the radical elements, we are under no obligation to try to accomodate them.

    And this idea of building a mosque near ground zero, the site of an event that triggered celebrations in the muslim world, is stupidly insensitive. Why can we not consider the feelings of our own citizens, before we consider those of a religious group who support our enemies?

    This is a good point. Muslim is a religion. American is a nationality. I think this is the source of confusion that our culture is being pulled into by other governments that mix nationality and religion.

    For example. At a hospital, a newborn baby is described by name, gender, height, weight, eye color, but they are never described as Muslim or Christian or Buddhist. Why? Because they are free beings and can make the decision later in life.

    So terminology is important in this case.

    Nice to see that Conservative lie falling apart. The founders of this project have repeatedly and unconditionally denounced the attacks of 9/11. No matter how much Cons wish it were so, we are not at war with Islam. We live in a country with religious freedom and this group is working well within the law to build a center for outreach and peace. Trying to subvert their legals writes with prejudice based on religion is exactly the kind of extremism we are trying to fight. Anyways, judging from the state of the ignorant posters here I think they would do well to visit this mosque, or any other local mosque for that matter. I fully realise who the 'enemy' is. As you state, they happen to be a smaller part of a larger group. Islam, as a whole, is not the enemy. Radical Islam, on the other hand, is. Estimates are that 'only' 2-3% of Islam are considered 'Radical'. Given there are approx 100 million followers of Islam . . . it is foolish and dangerous to label the Radicals a 'small micro group'.

  30. Warren Avatar

    GL and Art:

    That's really the issue here — fundamentalism or extremism in any religious sect. There are probably 2-3 percent of people who aren't in any specific religious group that are also dangerously crazy; rather than attributing their actions to the glory of some deity or another, they just end up as plain-vanilla serial killers.

    What I perceive as the problem is the in-group ethic that allows the deranged to swim beneath the surface. Generally we're unwilling to "snitch" on those whom we consider to be one of our own, so the nutjobs tend to go unreported, unhelped, and unnoticed, until they're flying airplanes into buildings or sending anthrax to government offices.

    It's easy for them to fit in with a general clique of extremist fanatics, because by contrast their own psychopathy isn't that much more radical — until they act on it.

    The vast majority of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and Christians are decent, caring people who sincerely want a better world for themselves and all others; it's the small pockets of corruption in the system that represent the danger. We can't ignore that threat, as Art is suggesting — but as GL is suggesting, we must be aware of it in all quarters, not simply one religious group.

They are doing everything Cons have demanded rhetorically. I would find it more offensive if they tried to open this mosque and ignore the events of 9/11. I hope they give a more resounding voice to moderate Islam, instead of the constant radical terror groups and ultra conservative mullahs.
